HILLMAN – History will come alive as you step back in time to life on the frontier and experience one of the Midwest’s greatest treasures at Thunder Bay Resort on Michigan’s Sunrise Side.

Gourmet home-style cooking — five courses plus wine tasting — is prepared before your group on 100-year-old wood cooking stoves in the antique- and trophy-filled Elk Antler Cabin. This is just one aspect of a totally unique and fabulous four-hour culinary, historical and agri-tourism event.

Elk Viewing, Carriage Ride, Gourmet Dinner & Wine Tasting at Thunder Bay Resort is a “10 Best in America” by USA Today.

Your trip begins behind massive teams of Percheron draft horses in carriages or sleighs.  It’s literally “over the river and through the woods” to Grandma Jan’s House. Visit the wooded Elk Preserve and learn about these amazing animals from your guide. Learn why elk antlers have remained highly prized in traditional Chinese and Korean medicine for 2,000 years.

During dinner, your guides serve wine, pass shed antlers from table to table for your inspection and demonstrate bugling — the bull elk’s mating call. Jan entertains over dessert with humorous stories about how the resort began, grandkids and other topics. Get back on your carriage or sleigh. Return to civilization and large comfortable suites, villas and chalets for a good night’s rest.

The menu includes shrimp cocktail, a pear-and-apple crepe, homemade chicken noodle soup, Jan’s special sweet Napa salad, crown roast of pork with redskin potatoes and white chocolate mousse stacked pizzelles with a mixed berry and white chocolate topping — plus five to seven appetizers and dinner and dessert wines.
